In 2016 the Rwandan government and the US robotics company Zipline agreed a partnership to deliver medical supplies by drone. According to MIT Technology Review, the government deal for the distribution centre near Muhanga was signed in mid-2016.
The service began introducing blood drops at Kabgayi hospital in late 2016. Drones were dispatched from a distribution centre about five kilometres from the hospital and carried sachets of blood, which the article describes as among the first commercial products ever delivered by drone.
