In mid-August 2018, seven swimmers about 70 metres from the beach at Sagunto, on Spain’s Mediterranean coast, were caught in an undertow. A remote pilot flew a General Drones lifeguard drone out to them, guided by a lifeguard by radio and watching the drone’s camera feed.
According to New Atlas, the operator dropped and guided a tethered life jacket, which inflated on contact with the water, to a struggling woman. The drone then hovered over the remaining swimmers, marking their position until lifeguards on jet skis could retrieve them. The Drive reported that everyone involved was safe.
