WeRobotics reports that its Peru Flying Labs team carried out a fact-finding mission from 12 to 21 December 2016 that included cargo drone field tests in the Contamana region of the Amazon, with permission from the Peruvian Civil Aviation Authority and the Ministry of Health. Partners included UAV del Peru, the Ministry of Health, regional health centres and local doctors.
After the planned cargo drone failed to work, the team used a repurposed fixed-wing mapping drone for two flights: one carried antivenom in a cold pack from Contamana to the village of Pampa Hermosa, about 40 kilometres away, during the day, and the other carried a blood sample back late at night. According to WeRobotics the flight took around 35 minutes, compared with up to six hours by riverboat, and the Ministry of Health and local doctors requested further field tests.
