Two hikers in their early 20s were reported overdue at about 7 pm on 23 June 2026 after walking the Dead Horse Gap track, roughly 35 kilometres south-west of Jindabyne. Fire and Rescue NSW crews from Jindabyne joined the search with a drone fitted with AI detection software and a thermal camera.
According to iTWire, the AI software identified the men in bushland and the thermal camera zoomed in to confirm the find; they were found less than five hours after being reported missing. Great Walks Australia reports they had strayed about 500 metres from the marked trail, were reached by police and State Emergency Service volunteers, and had mild exposure.
